There were some issues with the PEM filters on the Expert range which usually resulted in a bit of a burning smell, but it's not inconceivable it could hum too. In fact it could potentially hum in normal operation too if there was noise in the mains, e.g. a DC component, but then the companion would surely do the same? I'm sure a few people on the forum have had similar humming problems so hopefully someone can chime in (sorry, I missed thumb5's better response than mine above!).
I'm wondering if the master has the old PEM (Schurter filter) and the companion has a new or replacement one? Devialet are aware of problems like this anyway so to get such a curt response is disappointing, though not completely unexpected.
As for the case, I'm not aware of case finish being worse on older units. Mine is an early D170/D200 and it's perfect.
