MELCO

Tidal functionality is actually in the DS firmware with Linn, not the control point so using Kazoo won't give you Tidal ability unfortunately.

Ok, that's a shame. I guess I should have known that Blush Thanks, Rufus

Sorry Phil... I had to go away and think about this one. Clearly the totaldac d1 can't be a 10/10 if the N1Z is better.

I think I would now say that the N1Z is now my 10/10 reference... and I think both the totalddac d1 and N1A are very similar qualitatively speaking, although their qualities are perhaps a little different which makes it difficult to score them. I originally thought 9/10 for BOTH the totaldac d1 and N1A then I recanted. Given the performance gulf between the totaldac d1 and the N1Z I felt that a 10% difference didn't make sense, so this grew to 15%...

So now my final scores on the doors are N1Z 10/10, totaldac d1 8.5/10 and N1A 8/10. I must stress that these scores are for SQ only! They are also based on a few hours of listening so it's possible that my observations will change a little over time as I get more used to the Melco sound and explore more musical material. We didn't for example play any classical music. Or dance music for that matter!

Either way going back to the totaldac d1 hasn't been difficult at all and I am finding myself rather enjoying it, which isn't always the case when an incumbent is usurped... I'm not quite ready to oust him just yet!  Tongue

Guillaume

Thanks Guillaume

Do you still have the Melcos and as such will be able to expand on your initial observations or you had to give them back already?

Unfortunately I didn't get to keep the Melcos so this will have to be for another time.  Sad

Well, following the kind invitation to join this illustrious group how could I resist. Smile

I am not going to embark on any technical tutoring or sales pitching, and neither am I able to claim any Brownie Points for the Melco solution - it is a rather excellent team effort and my involvement was relatively late in the day.

I will say though that the architecture and engineering approach is just so compellingly 'on target' that from the minute I met the guys I knew that we should be doing something together to move the whole Streaming and Computer Music experience forward.

It is possibly unique that an IT company with the huge resources of Buffalo Technology could ever get involved in high-end Audio - all down to the origins of the Company as a boutique high-end Japanese Hi-Fi manufacturer from the 1970s, with the founder, Mr Maki, still taking an active interest in this particular project as he has always been a serious Audiophile.

So back to lurking, but happy to clear up any misunderstandings maybe - although I feel that the two corespondents so far are doing a far better and honest job of describing the product that I could do!

Enjoy the music!

Welcome to the Forum. As you imply, there's no need for you to deliver a sales pitch as Guillaume and Rufus are doing such a great job (presumably not on commission Wink) but it would be helpful if you could provide some information on production direction.

Many of us are looking for a steamer that supports streaming of locally stored ripped or downloaded files, on-line music services (primarily Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer) and also Internet radio.  There are already a few products that can do this e.g. from Linn, NAD and Auralic but we're looking for even better SQ. Do you have any plans to add support for on-line music services and Internet radio to your products?

Thanks in anticipation Smile

Hi Alan!
When it is approximately possible to expect appearance of your CP? Because the existing CP such as Kinsky, Kazoo, Lumin, Conductor, Songbook, etc. often don't see my Linn KDS connected to N1Z or lose it in case of change of opened application in iPad 2 ios 7.0.1. The situation with PlugPlayer is better, but too it isn't so good as it would be desirable. For comparing my DIY NAS with the network bridge a la Melco on Windows has practically no problems with detection and/or loss of the server and/or a renderer (LKDS).
And also there is a strong wish to see the firmware with minimserver. Because now a half of covers isn't shown in CP.

Hi..
I dont know if I am answering to the right question, but if you are using BubbleUPnP, it sees Tidal as a library and possibly Melco (in my case the Cubox MPD) as a renderer. So you should be able to stream Tidal through Melco using your mobile/ipad. I am nicely listening to Tidal now through my HTC - Cubox - Devialet setup.
Cheers.

That's good news, but also annoying because I don't have an Android tablet! I do miss BubbleUPNP/DS.  I think that should work with the Melco too as it presents itself as a UPnP renderer.

Wow! I didn't know that this was possible. Thanks for sharing
