That was kind of my thought, and the Aurenders looks much nicer IMO (although quite a bit more expensive than the N1A). Put the Melco in a much nicer, and smaller box (without the drives), and make it RoonReady, and I'd probably have one in my lounge now if its on par with the SQ of the N1A (never heard one but there are too many good reviews here and elsewhere to assume it sounds anything other than good).
Yes, looking at the photo of the inside of the N1A that Mike Spragg posted there's plenty of empty space and if the HDDs were taken out it could all fit into, as you say, a much nicer and smaller box. I wish they. would do that - these full width boxes are so last decade
