Ultimate speaker for 440
#1
B&W and Sonus Faber owners seem to favour Macintosh; Sugden - Harbeth, Spendor, Pro-Ac; Magico has D’Agostini amps, but we don’t appear to have a preferred transducer in our camp. I’d be curious to find out what speakers the 440 has a natural affinity with and how far up the audiophile ladder they’ve successfully mated? Thinking one day I might go Watt Puppies but wondered if there are examples of matching with a better speaker than those?
2014 Mac Mini running Roon via Vodafone hub/Amazon basics ethernet cable into:
  • Devialet 440 (RCA to ground lifted AES)
  • Focal Sopra 2 (YYAudio Black Magic speaker cable)
  • Rel S812 x 4 (std hi-level cables and £25 Van Damme Speakon array connects, Cruiser class £35 Chinese mains cables)
  • no intentional room treatment.

I'm a B&W 802 user for 36 years and never ever will I buy a McIntosh or Sugden or similar. I'm happily using a 440-Pro (earlier D400) for the last 10 years and my next move is to Burmester! If I ever get into a space constrained room in my old age, I'd get a B&W bookshelf with an Air Tight amp.

Focal Scala Utopia is a pretty great match. They really began to sing when I added the second amp.

I am using Devialet 400 for my Focal Kanta 2, it sounds quite good. Focal are very airy speakers in general, and Devialet has very airy sound as well. In choosing cables and playing with power, do use those with 'thicker' sound so that the treble will not be too much.

BTW, Bertie I see that you use 4 subwoofers, 2 on each side stacked up I suppose. How do you calibrate the stacked up subwoofers? I see there are some tutorials on youtube but I don't really understand what they are saying.
