Complementary Roon subscriptions with purchase of Expert Pros
#1
Maybe this is only news to me but I happened to be looking at Devialet's website and I checked to see what they're now saying about being Roon Ready there.   Of course they're still claiming Roon Ready on all the Expert Pros (despite the RAAT gigabit ethernet problem) ... but what surprised me was this...

A complementary 1 year Roon subscription with the purchase of a Stereo Expert Pro.

A complementary lifetime subscription with the purchase of a Dual Mono Expert.

Look here: https://www.devialet.com/en-us/story-roon-ready/ and scroll down.

Now, if you scroll down, there is a confusing footnote below a button to upgrade from Expert to Expert Pro that indicates that this offer expired in June 2019.   Still, this is out on the Devialet site now.   Did anyone know of this?   Did anyone take advantage of it?    Just curious.... I never saw any mention of this in the Roon forums.

I wasn't aware of that offer. I do remember when Roon introduced streaming via Devialet AIR that we received notification by email of an offer of a free 3 month trial of Roon rather than Roon's standard 1 month free trial offer and I took that up.

I think that Devialet can claim that the Expert Pros are Roon Ready because they're certified by Roon as such and RAAT works without problems if you use WiFi or a 100T gigabit connection. and some people like me never notice a problem with a gigabit connection provided we don't stream high res files. I really only had the problem when I streamed 192/24 streams, not at 176.4/24 or below. The fact that there is a problem with gigabit ethernet connections which affects users differently doesn't make the amps not Roon Ready when a Roon Ready connection works without problems for many people. I wonder what percentage of users have actually experienced the problem since many are going to be streaming via WiFi rather than ethernet and many of those streaming ethernet aren't going to be streaming high res files. I think that it will be only a minority, i.e. least than 50% of users, who have experienced problems and it may even be a small minority but we've got no way of really knowing. What I do know is that if you count the users here who have posted reporting the gigabit problem and compare it to the total number of forum members, probably only around 10-15% of members have reported the problem but then not all members have Expert Pros so that will translate to a higher proportion of members with Expert Pros.

While I don't have a problem with Devialet saying that the Expert Pros are Roon Ready, I do think they should publicly acknowledge the gigabit ethernet issue and tell people how to work around it until they get around to releasing a firmware fix. They're not doing that and some. possibly many, new purchasers who use gigabit ethernet connections are going to have problems depending on whether or not they're streaming high res files. People should be told the full facts and they aren't being told the full facts by Devialet.

Obviously you're not in sales David. In sales, it's better to ask for forgiveness than to point out you have a potential problem for which you might have a fix. It's not honest but that's just how business is run these days.

You're right, I'm not in sales. As far as Devialet is concerned, I'm in purchasing and that means I pay them rather than they pay me   Smile

Devialet/Roon integration is actually very good, despite the gigabit issue which has workarounds, and a Roon lifetime with a dual mono is a pretty good deal ($699 usd value).

@David A - Sorry, I wasn't trying to bemoan the RAAT gigabit issue. It is what it is and hopefully will eventually be fixed. But I was quite surprised by the offer of free Roon. I now use Roon almost exclusively with my Devialet and can't imagine not having Roon. So the offer of a free lifetime subscription would seem to be a huge perk that seems to be a well kept secret.

@mdconnelly - no worries. I agree about the Roon subscriptions. The gigabit ethernet problem is a running sore for many of us, hard to ignore and hard to keep out of any discussion which includes the words "Devialet" and "Roon" in the same sentence. It's a problem that in a perverse way links the best and the worst of Devialet. It's a feature they hadn't promised and didn't have to provide because of that yet they got a lot of requests from owners and did promise and deliver it which certainly counts as showing their best side rather well. Unfortunately they had a bug in the software, a bug which Roon missed as well some do need to cut Devialet a little slack there, but their response to the discovery of the bug has demonstrated the worst side of Devialet rather well.

In my view, if you can successfully work around the bug, and a 100T connection to my 140 has done that for me, the combination of Devialet and Roon over a Roon Ready connection is wonderful. They really need to fix that bug and fix it very soon given the length of time people have been living with it.

I don't object to anyone complaining about the ethernet issue, it needs to be complained about. I just think we should be a lot more honest than Devialet has been about it when we complain. The amps are Roon Ready but with a serious flaw. Damn the flaw as much as you like, if it takes a squeaky wheel to get some oil then let's all be squeaky wheels about the bug but we should acknowldege that the amps are Roon Ready and be grateful for that.

And actually it does seem as if the bug isn't in the Roon Ready code, it's in the way the amp handles the incoming data in the queue. It's a problem that could probably affect other ethernet data flows if they use enough bandwidth, unfortunately it seems that a Roon Ready connection is the only data flow currently available that triggers the bug.

Hi David A, I agree with you in a few things, but I still don't believe in the Devialet RAAT error 1000 / 100Mbit.  I myself only had the dropouts as long as I was running the ROON core on the mac mini or on a windows machine (I have reported in detail).  I then switched to an i7 Nuc and Roon Rock, and everything went well.  No problem with 1GBit network and HD files 192 khz or larger.  One of my friends also has a 220pro and a notebook with ROON core and also problems with dropouts, because I then bought a Nucleus + (the reason was the fan in the Nuc) I then sold the Nuc to my friend.  All of a sudden, the dropouts are gone and 1Ghz network and HD files 192khz has been running for months without interference!  Therefore I find it difficult to push the RAAT error towards Devialet.  If it were a devialet error, all users or none (with the same software version) would have it.  It would make sense to start a query among the chat members who has problems and with which hardware / OS (Rock, Mac, Windows, Network, Router, Switch etc.)
Maybe there will be some parallels when errors occur! Wink

@K4680 - interesting because I have been contemplating moving to Rock on a NUC. But I'm pretty sure I've seen others that have run into the gigabit problem when using a NUC. Personally, I've tried two different i7 Win10 PCs and both resulted in the same problem via gigabit ethernet. But, when switched to 100mbps or wifi, all seems to work fine.

If/when I switch to a NUC, I will definitely post what happens (assuming Devialet doesn't fix it first - hah!)
