Connecting 2x Phantom 103Db to audio interface
#1
Hi all,

New to the forum and new to discovering Devialet speakers! Potentially purchasing some soon for Near-field monitoring at full-range from 20Hz to 20 KHz at a listening level of of around 73dB SPL C-weighted. I Wanted to see what the best way of going-about connecting everything together is first.

I currently have the Black Lion Audio Revolution 2x2 Audio Interface:
https://dt7v1i9vyp3mf.cloudfront.net/sty...pO7THJ.jpg

It has the following connections at the back:
2x TRS Balanced 6.5mm jack outputs
S/PDIF Digital Input - coax-style
S/PDIF Digital Output - coax-style

My plan is to connect the Phantom's to my surge-protector multi-plug to be able to enable PLC mode to connect both speakers together.

Then use a S/PDIF Coax to S/PDIF toslink converter box:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/PORTTA-N3C21BT-...WNrPXRydWU=

To then connect my audio interface to one of the Phantom's toslink inputs. This would be done via optical direct mode to reduce latency I think?

Would this allow for stereo playback from my audio interface to the Phantom speakers?

Would this potentially need to be done an alternative way?

Also thinking of the Phantom 2's and then connecting each separately by using 6.5mm TRS to 3.5mm jack cables to each speaker but I'm presuming the Phantom 103dB will give me a full 20Hz - 20Khz listening experience instead.

Thanks all for your help and time!

I seem to remember that the Phantom I does not have L R selection in direct optical mode, but I may be wrong here. I do not own Phantoms so I cannot check unfortunately.

@ogs
Phantom I does have the left/right selection in optical direct mode but both speakers need an optical source in optical direct mode, so @audiobirdi needs to add an optical splitter to his audio chain.

To the OP; when you write near field, how close are you planning to listen?

Thanks @ragwo
so @audiobirdi 's thought of using PLC to link the speakers may not work?

@ogs @audiobirdi PLC doesn't work in optical direct mode.

Many thanks for all of your help so far Big Grin

I plan on having my listening position between 80cm to 120m away from me, in an equilateral triangle with a toe-in of 35 degrees for each speaker.

So if I go for the following audio chain, it would work with a pair of Devialet Phantoms?

Audio Interface with S/PDIF Coax Digital Output >> S/PDIF Digital Coax to toslink converter >> Toslink 1 input to 2 output splitter >> each toslink cable to an individual Phantom speaker

The following items will be used:
Black Lion Revolution 2x2

LINKFOR Coax to Toslink digital converter
https://www.amazon.co.uk/LiNKFOR-Bi-Dire...B087JJ24SG

SiYear 1 in - 2 out Optical Toslink Splitter
https://www.amazon.co.uk/SiYear-Digital-...ONIC_CABLE

Devailet Phantom x2
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Devialet-Phantom/dp/B077QTN7QC

2x Optical Toslink Cables

I'm hoping the above signal chain would be correct for what I'm planning on doing?

Thanks for your help so far!

I would take a look at the Mutec MC-3 +USB if I were you. High quality conversion from coax to toslink and a reclocker too. You'll still need the toslink splitter. Only one toslink out on the Mutec. There is a long thread on the Mutec here at DC.

Your plan looks all right. It should work like a charm.

@ogs thanks for the recommendation, spending £1K on a converter seems a bit excessive since there's a clock already inside my audio interface aha.

@ragwo many thanks for checking and verifying the signal chain looks correct, looking forward to seeing how the Phantom II and Phantom I sound against one another! Smile

You're welcome! By the way, you should buy a powered optical splitter just to be sure of no degradation of the signal. They're dirt cheap on fleabay etc.
