Dual Mono 440 Pro: Red/Black Confusion Between Configurator and Support
#1

Hi all,

I’m posting this here because since November 1st I have been trying to get a clear answer from Devialet support regarding my Expert Pro 440 in Dual Mono configuration, but the issue remains unresolved.

The core problem

In the Dual Mono 440 Pro setting in the Devialet Configurator, the diagram appears to show the black speaker wire connected to the second terminal (which is red) when viewed from the power cable side towards the AES/EBU connection.

However, Support keeps repeating the standard answer:

Quote:Red (+) to Red
Quote:Black (–) to Black
Quote:Use only two terminals per amplifier

While that is logically correct in normal polarity terms, it does not address the contradiction with the Configurator diagram.

My response to Devialet

I wrote the following to them:
  • The Configurator clearly shows the black (negative) speaker wire connected to what visually appears to be a red terminal.
  • This is precisely why I asked the question so explicitly.
  • Either the support answer is incorrect, or the Configurator has been displaying incorrect information to all Dual Mono users (at least for the 440 Pro).

I explicitly asked them to:

  1. Verify internally with engineering which connection scheme is correct for the Expert Pro 440 in Dual Mono.
  2. Clarify whether long-term use of the connection as shown in the Configurator could cause damage or performance issues.
  3. Confirm definitively which terminal is positive and which is negative in mono mode.
  4. Confirm whether “Phase” in the Configurator should remain set to “+”.

Current situation

Support does not respond to the discrepancy itself. They simply repeat “red to red, black to black,” without explaining why the Configurator appears to show something different. I follow the configurator.

It is now mid-February. This has been ongoing for over three months.

My questions to other 440 Pro Dual Mono owners

  1. Have you simply wired red to red and black to black, ignoring how the Configurator drawing appears?
  2. Has anyone received a technically verified answer from Devialet engineering?
  3. Has anyone else noticed this discrepancy?
  4. Could the Configurator diagram be visually misleading because of the viewing orientation?

I find it concerning that such a fundamental wiring question remains unclear for a flagship product used by many in Dual Mono.

Any insight from experienced users would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

The configurator is showing the correct speaker wiring for a dual-mono configuration.

In dual-mono mode, the left and right stereo channels of each amplifier are bridged to drive one speaker, so the "output" (red) terminals) are both connected to the same speaker and the "ground" (black) terminals are not connected at all.

A poor show from Devialet support if they don't understand that.

Hope this answers your issue. I'm a Dual-Mono 440-Pro CI user.

Hi Ian,

Thank you for your response.

For clarity, I have wired everything red to red (and black to black), exactly as you describe and in accordance with the configurator.

The reason this has been so frustrating is that I have raised the configurator discrepancy multiple times with the helpdesk, and each time the reply simply repeats the standard “red to red, black to black” instruction — without ever addressing the fact that the official Configurator diagram appears to show something different in Dual Mono mode.

So yes, I do agree with your comment. If support doesn’t understand — or doesn’t acknowledge — the inconsistency between their own configurator and their written instructions, that is indeed not a great look.

Best,
Marcel
