External phono preamp for Expert pro 140?
#15
Finally I purchased a Rega Fono MC mk4 preamp, as I found its cost reasonable enough to give it a try. I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised with the results vs. using the Expert phono stage without being able to adjust the loading. Now that the preamp settings are fully aligned with Rega's recommendations for the Ania Pro, I am experiencing a significantly "fuller" and more balanced sound, especially in the mids, less harshness / brightness, and in terms of volume I push it to 5-10 dB less than before.

So based on my experience, if you have a 120/140 and a MC cartridge, it seems like a good idea to bypass the Expert phono stage and fit an external preamp into your system. Still from a design point of view, I understand now that it does not make sense that the Devialet 140 phono stage supports MC cartridges but without loading adjustment possibilities.
