DYNAMIC POWER MANAGEMENT:
Dpm on:
Normal music: 26W / silent turned up to maximum volume: 49W / Standby: 12W / Off: 4W
Dpm off:
Normal music: 26W / silent turned up to maximum volume: 49W / Standby: 12W / Off: 4W
So, no differences at all! Can anyone confirm?
TEMEPRATURES:
Remarkably lower compared to 7.1.3 while listening at normal volume (-38db to -20db, in my case). I’m talking about 5-6°, a difference that you not only can see on the sensor readings, but something you can immediately feel when touching.
SOUND QUALITY
Without SAM enabled, the chances to 7.1.3 are subtle. Maybe a little bit smoother overall and maybe a little bit more detail and loudness at lower volumes. But probably I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference in a ABX-Test, I have to be honest here.
INTELLIGENT CINEMA MODE – HOW DOES IT WORK IN PRACTICE?
While playing normal music, enabling it immediately reduces the volume by about -2db. This can be clearly heard, also when I “blinded” myself if it was on or off. While playing a movie or a FLAC-File with a conversation (not singing) the volume stayed exactly the same, if I pressed the button or not. I immediately thought it’s just a kind of dumb equalizer, maybe boosting frequencies between 125hz and 500hz, but this is clearly not the case. I generated test tones for all kinds of frequencies and tested the effect of ICM, there was always this volume reduction, also for sinus test tones in the human voice spectrum.
So my theory is that it is indeed a kind of “intelligent” algorithm. But actually working in the opposite direction by slightly reducing the volume when no voices are detected, instead of increasing the volume for voices into potential clipping territories. I think it was a clever idea of Devialet because it is not deteriorating normal music and the effect is not exaggerated. But please Devialet, just let me assign ICM permanently to my optical input only, with which I’m watching all my movies. No need of having a button assigned on my remote control.
SAM
Since my speakers (Boenicke W8) are not SAM profiled, I should probably not talk about SAM at all. But since I’m curious I have tried different SAM V1 –Profiles on them in the past and have done so now again with SAM V2. Here I have heard big differences between the firmware versions, mostly reducing the bass boost effect in the new firmware. For my speakers the bass boost effects of other speakers profiles are way too much, and since my bass driver runs without crossover, my speakers probably wouldn’t benefit from SAM either to correct crossover weaknesses. A little more bass (+2db) below 50hz sounds nice, but is not really necessary with my speakers.
REMOTE CONTROL
If you assign ICM to the tone button, then treble and bass will be automatically available by a long press on the mute button.
Happy testing :-)
Looks like it was fun Thanks for sharing
