A couple of months back I took the plunge and bought a 220. A couple of months before that I was kind of happy with the sound from my Cambridge Edge streamer and 100w stereo power amp and thought that replacing the stereo power amp with 2 x monos would get me to Nirvana for sure. As I’m getting old, I can’t even remember why I switched to Devialet but here I am. TBF it didn’t bring about the improvement I was seeking. What the 220 has brought me is a weirdly wide soundstage, extraordinary bass control and more details in the music. I’m still using the same old QED silver anniversary speaker cable but I’ve connected the supplied Audioquest mains cable direct into the wall instead of into the usual Amazon basics 4 way.
The ecosystem I now found myself inhabiting seems totally onboard with cables, power conditioning, network improvements, clocks and room conditioning, using words like ‘incredible’ ‘game changing’ and ‘another league’. I’m bewildered to say the least and am in the ‘digital’s either 0 or 1’ camp, so will have to expose myself to your ‘alternative’ wisdom a bit more before I’ll even attempt to upgrade a cable, add a clock or ‘improve’ the onboard DAC with a better streamer. I did plug my Cambridge NQ in and couldn’t hear a difference from Roon on a Mac Mini. What I will say is - whatever it’s doing, I’m in and will still get another 220 despite the hordes protesting the brand and encouraging leaving the ship.
