New Melco Firmware 3.0
#1
FYI: Melco have just released v3.0 firmware.

We have been beta testing for a while - Its very good indeed.

Improvements to the USB and network output performance. They have also enabled direct disc ripping from an external USB disc drive.

We have already been able to hear the difference between files imported over network vs cd's ripped direct to the drive. We have also tested WAV vs FLAC (uncompressed).

On Blind listening (very unscientific), 100% of subjects have preferred the WAV file.

Metadata look up (via gracenotes) is simple and has found the first 30 cds without issue (even have artwork imbedded when ripping in WAV).

This is a real game changer for those of us out there who do not have the time, skill and inclination to build our own super server from scratch.

Will Roon be able to access Melco's hard disk and watch a folder?

Huh? It's been out for a month or so hasn't it?
Sound quality improvement over USB is fantastic.

I cant answer the Roon question but the Melco does make the fileshare available on the network via regular Windows SMB/CIFS (and always did).

Okay, Yes, if you are using a control point that has Roon on it, it will access the Melco drive. The Melco will only be acting as a storage device in this configuration.

In the future, it may well be a possibility that Roon could be loaded into the Melco, but not yet.

LOL. You had me confused for a while. Firmware version 3.0 has been out since mid May.

Confused

We are a bit behind out here. As we would say - NFN (Normal for Norfolk)

Have had a few opportunities to listen recently - 3.0 is a good step forward :-)

Cool

Ha ha, first I have heard of that term.

You would not be the first one reporting better sound with v3.0.

Rufus McDufus has reported that, compared to previous firmware versions, there is a SQ improvement with v3.0.

I noticed a more extended highs (and to a lesser extent, punchier bass) compared to v2.30. Slightly more dynamic too.

Not dramatic but these were the bits that were previously shaded by the SPDIF output of the Lumin A1.
