It would appear that we are all clear as to using the microRendu with "mode #5", that is Roon.

That's fine, but it still leaves the question as to how else it can be used, with the various "mode #3" options?

Confused, have you tried over at the main microRendu CA thread (with a crazy-long URL)? I haven't read it all but there's a quite varied group there and the Sonore guys (and helpers) post. From the bits I've read most seem to be thinking along the lines of HQ Player or Roon endpoint, but there are others talking about the rest of the modes….

#3A, DLNA, which some people also know as uPnP/OpenHome. With this option the microrendu becomes a 'renderer' to which you can stream music from a NAS or music server running a uPnP server like Minimserver, Twonky etc.

#3B, SMB, play files from any networked server or NAS supporting the SMB/CIFS/Samba protocol. Most people know this as 'network shares' e.g. \\NAS\music or a mapped share as a network drive.

Excellent Antoine, it's good to have someone around who appears to understand this stuff!  So going back to my earlier query and to see if I am interpreting this correctly, you could use a mode #3 to run JRiver form a PC, however, for something like iTunes, this would not work?

Correct, the music player running on a computer somewhere else on your network needs to support DLNA/uPNP/Open Home (this last one is an extension to uPnP AV) to use #3A.

You would need a virtual soundcard device like Devialet's AIR or Linn's Songcast to capture audio of other programs that normally output to a soundcard, and convert and stream this to something else. There's no direct support for this in the microRendu. However I do know about Jamcast which does this and converts data to DLNA/uPnP. I have never tried this program but in theory this would work. https://getjamcast.com

The Axpona Audio Show will mark the first appearance of a pre-production sample microRendu. The microRendu will be in Room #336 (Vinnie Rossi / Harbeth / Acoustic Signature Turntables) where it will stream directly into a LIO DSD/PCM DAC. The microRendu will be powered by a super-regulated, ultracap power supply module that Vinnie is making specifically for this purpose. He will then use the RoonReady output mode via a Macbook Air running Roon.

I'm listening to a 'pre-production' microRendu as I type this.

Here is the signal chain:

Macbook Air running Roon >> Belkin wireless bridge >> microRendu >> Vinnie Rossi LIO (LIO DSD/PCM dac).

As JR mentioned above, the LIO has a DC output jack feeding the microRendu from LIO's isolated ultracapacitor supply (Belleson super-regulated down to 8Vdc). I'll have this at AXPONA Room 336 (with Harbeth 40.2 loudspeakers) - same signal chain will be used.

How does it sound?

I'm not here to post a review or comparisons to other products (I'll leave that to the reviewers and customers), but I want
to simply say that I am beyond impressed with microRendu's performance! It will be my pleasure to show it off at AXPONA as our main digital source.

I have a mix of different high res tracks, with PCM up to 24/192 and DSD / double DSD (LIO's dac runs DoP - DSD over PCM). Very smooth playback so far...

I predict this little gem (approx. 3" x 2"), fed from a clean power supply, is going to knock your socks off and leave you scratching your head wondering how John Swenson, JR, and the team pulled this one off. Performance/Price ratio is phenomenal! Congratulations, Team Sonore! "Nuff said for now ;-)
