Struggling with designing a reliable setup
#1
Hi All,

When i first was introduced to Devialet by clients i reached out for design suggestions.

A typical client setup would have Phantom I's or Phantoms II's setup in a stereo pair but the typical client still wanted Sonos active in the setup. Devialet suggested i made sure to run Cat6 to each Phantom with the concept of using some form of balun to convert from toslink or spdif over Catx to the optical input on the Phantom from the coax output of a Sonos port ... with some gadget that takes the single Sonos port coax output and send it to the 2 phantoms over optical toslink.

I'm wondering, isn't it better to attach a Sonos port to a Devialet arch then send it all directly over Cat6 to the Phantoms?

Is that because they want multi-room playback with both devialet and Sonos?

Stopped using Roon a while ago as I got fed up with all the bugs but if they have (finally) fixed the Sonos integration you could set them all up as zones as the multi zone playback sync is quite good in roon?

Chris, thank-you for replying and helping me out!

Yes, they want multi-room playback with Sonos ... they love their Devialet speakers though.

Here is my current challenge. They will have four (4) Phantom I's  in the great room. 2-Left and 2-Right setup as a sigle zone. These all have power and Cat6 run to them as suggested by Devialet ... their solution was to use Toslink -> Cat6 baluns to connect Sonos ports to the Phantoms with toslink cables.

So, my preference would be to use Cat6 to deliver the audio signal to the phantoms and eliminate the need to convert the audio outputs ... I would then connect the Sonos Port with digital coax to the Devialet Arch as the source. I assume this is the purpose of the Arch? Does this sound like a good setup considering i HAVE to include Sonos?

Thanks again!

I don't know anything about phantoms (I have an Expert 120) but looking at the Arch that seems like a good approach as the devialet will be managing the multi device sync.

If they have a Sonos Port/Connect/ZP90 etc the coax digital output is the best option as the DAC in the Sonos is not great (and that's being polite)

Just had a quick look at the Roon forum and Sonos integration still isn't fixed so I'd forget about Roon.
