Tidal announcement
#1
Looks like Tidal is on the verge of announcing HD streaming - there is a count down on their website: 6 days, 18 hours, 5 minutes...

http://tidalhifi.com/

Will this use Meridian's MQA technology?

I just signed up for a free trial and when I saw this I thought it is counting my free trial period. Good that I this is something else.
Btw, I experience occasioanal drop outs, I currently stream it through Air ethernet. Is this normal?

Thanks for sharing. An intense read but very informative.

I believe MQA will be the answer for a much better streaming capabilities for 192/42

I hope Qobuz survive in the coming waves of streaming services. Not sure why, I just think they were brave to start it off and offer a great service with decent SQ. My only issue is their seeming lack of grasp of making their software attractive and easy to use, and search functions more sensible. And of course grasping that an international market might not want things to appear in French - not least a desktop program that defaults to french on install so it's not obvious how to operate it. Simple things but they don't seem too determined to fix them.
When I (and many others) spotted the opportunity to stream High Res, and suggested it, Qobuz seemed dismissive. To my mind, the first service to offer this along with a decent CD quality library will probably corner the market as it appeals to all users. So I fear Tidal may end up being what we all use.....

The biggest flaw, or weakness, of lossless algorithms, even FLAC, is the processing power needed during playback and the time it steals from the playback buffering which then introduces timing errors... Hence the clear (to my ears) difference between FLAC and a simple Wav file... And, on top, there is the filtering issue, which is discussed here as well, which is the main reason why an upsampled version of the same 44k file sounds "better" than the original, although no new musical information is present.
What the MQA is doing is very clever, but I believe some time will pass until the dust settles down in terms of proper implementation.
