Noticed with Devialet 200 and 400. When SAM is on every step above and up to +5db makes a kind of pop sound (some distortions) in loudspeakers. Detected without playing any sound/music. Could you check that on your systems? When SAM is off i can up the volume till the Volume limit without any back sound.

Gave it a quick go on my D200 - no music playing, volume up to +5dB, SAM on, not hearing any pops.

Just a thought. Could it be related to your particular SAM file? What SAM file (speakers) are you using?
