What album are you listening tonight?
(06-Jul-2018, 16:01)Damon Wrote: A request for more information:

18 months ago or so there were a few posts requesting that messages here include a bit of information about the music  being recommended; a description of the genre or a few comments about the music or the album. Or why it is different than other albums by the same artist. As they say on the Naim forum, 'what are you listening to and why might anyone be interested'. Album covers are great but sometimes the images are so small that the text with the artist name or album title is unreadable.

This is the thread I come to much more than any other so the album info and some brief opinion/ editorial notes would be very much appreciated.

Thanks all.

Thanks for the support, guys. I posted only because I rely on this thread for new musical finds, and I've come to some great material through this thread. That is why a bit of info about the genre, or related music or musicians helps. And this true for ambient electronica to non-traditional modern classical soundscape creations.

Over the years, I've realized that, although I like music very much, in truth there is a lot of music that I don't like.... so, the references and sharing of others is one of my few resources for finding new music that I like. I'll close then by saying 'thank you' to all for keeping this part of the Forum in the lead with the highest post total of all.

That's my goal, to find new music in almost every genre, but especially original ones with something that sets them apart from everything I've heard ... and I've heard a lot.

For this, the description is fundamental.

I just listened to Dan Tepfer's fascinating version of the Goldberg Variations on TIDAL. He moves back and forth between Variations and improvised jazz takes on each one. Totally gripping and massive improvisatory and musical chops to pull it off. I was led to that record by the brand new exquisite Lee Konitz and Dan Tepfer duet album, Decade. Streaming on TIDAL in MQA. Beautiful and moving. I got to see Lee Konitz perform earlier this year on his 90th birthday. It was the third concert I've been to by a 90 year old (Roy Haynes and Benny Carter as well). It was amazing, personal and fragile, as is this record.

Finely-crafted, dark, blues-tinged ballads. "Higgs Boson Blues" is the stand-out track for me.

Strange, but (therefore?) compelling. To quote from the review by Andy Kellman (on Roon): "This is post-punk at its most invigorating and terrifying."
