Anyone try using D200 to drive high impedance headphone? Can it drive 300ohm headphone?

Hi

I use a pair of stereo pre-amp outs on the D to drive my Sennheiser HD800s which are a 300 ohm load.

I've never heard them sound so good!

Is this plugged into the 200 without a headphone amp? I currently use a headphone amp and I am keen to try the alternative route of using the 200

Hi,

Yes, plugged straight into the amp, with a couple of adapters, no headphone amp. I sold my Graham Slee Solo Ultralinear because it became redundant!

Thanks. I intend to order a Sennheiser HD600. Any special config/setting required on configurator?

Hi

You'll have to set a pair of  digital inputs to act as preamp stereo outputs (I use the pair next to the AES/EBU socket), and untick the box that says "mute applies to this output". You'll also need an adapter to go from phono to jack socket.

In general settings under startup, tick the sub/preout box.

Some people advise you to have a remote button programmed to turn the preamp output off, but I've never bothered with this as I just unplug my 'phones.

There's no question the Devialet 200 can drive my HD650's. Volume has to be kept relatively high with the default output level setting but there's quite a lot of power left in the tap. Unfortunately at least to my ears the Devialet doesn't sound quite as good this way as my Benchmark DAC2 HGC did.

This is interesting. I am going to do a comparison between the 200 and my MFMIHAP when the RCA connector arrives. I am hoping to get rid of the dedicated amp, but there are a few people on here who feel the 200 is not as good as a dedicated Headphone amp.
Hi all. Well the RCA adapter arrived this morning and I did the comparison. The MF headphone amp won by some way in my opinion, so looks like I wont be able to dispense with another box/cables etc.

The Headphone amp was clearer, more musical and controlled the bass better. I was a little surprised, but I guess thats why there are dedicated Headphone amps.
