Yes, I feel exactly the same.
I really do not like the trend that devices can only be fully used with an app, it is just a matter of time until either the app is broken by a platform update and can't be used until it is fixed/updated, or app development/support simply stops and the device is orphaned.
If devices had an 'open' specification to allow creating a non-manufacturer app, it would at least allow extended life - I have an expensive film scanner, Nikon stopped support long ago, but the interface was open enough that non-Nikon software still supports it perfectly, actually it is better than Nikon's!
