I ended up selling my D1000 shortly after it was rumoured that Devialet was about to end production. Since then I have gone back and forth with different amplifiers and DACs including Gryphon, Pass Labs and Vitus but never really found any lasting satisfaction and balance in the way it sounds. Yes, it's easy to find a more organic sound compared to Devialet with more texture and bass thump but I find myself having to focus more actively when listening to other amplifiers and the room gets easily overloaded with bloated bass.
I'm now considering buying a second hand D250 and go back to Devialet for the third time. Would this be a sane thing to do considering the company's failures to deliever on promises etc. or would it be a smart move, especially since the D250 would cost me less than 5000 EUR? Would it be possible to find something else for the same amount of money to compete with the D250 when it comes to sound quality?
Please give me some guidance here...
It reads like you're answering your own question; get another 250.
I haven't changed from my Od'A / 1000Pro, but I have listened to plenty of others in stores. Only a few brands have given me the same enjoyment as Devialet. Simaudio as per above, Electrocompaniet and Ypsilon. Simaudio is the only brand here that also has a remote control that could compete with the Devialet remote. I haven't heard the lower end of Simaudio with those remotes though, so you'll haven to find out for yourself.
