ROON - What exactly is it?
#7
Samurai, you're asking the question right at the precipice of the first wave of 'RoonReady' devices being announced at CES.

The thread at the end has more info, but in a nutshell, hardware vendors are building the Roon proprietary transport into their devices so you'll be able to stream direct to dedicated hardware 'enpoints' from Roon, including eventually multi-room etc.

Things are expanding rapidly. As you can see from the quote below, Bryston have announced their partnership. So there will be more choice for control software for you.

Quote:Broadening our outlook, software updates from IQ Audio, Small Green Computer, and Sonore, that will certify their devices as RoonReady, will reportedly land this month also.

Other manufacturers signing on for the RoonReady programme include Audio Alchemy, Bel Canto, Bryston, Cary Audio, Constellation Audio, dCS, Exasound, LH Labs, Lumin, PS Audio, SoTM, and TotalDAC.

They are also on the verge of releasing 'RoonSpeakers' as software for computers and lightweight devices like the Raspberry Pi, so they can all become networked enpoints too.

Roons real strength apart from a beautiful UI is discovery. Both factors suckered me in.

You do need a computer running RoonServer somewhere in the chain, but even that is changing as some hardware vendors are making specific RoonServer devices that can do it all in one.

So in your case Roon on the iPad would replace mpad. To do that you'd need a RoonServer running on a computer. How quickly Bryston will integrate it I've no idea.

If Devialet adopted 'RoonReady' we'd all be able to stream direct from Roon to the Devialet over Ethernet/wifi as per Air. But no doubt more stable, and with things like volume control.

Sadly, Devialet have said they have no intention of adopting it, both to me, and to the Roon developers. So, while most other high-end DAC manufacturers will soon have a stable Air like ability, us Devialet owners  with unworkable Air situations will be stuck with USB. Oh, the irony.
