Falling smack bang in the middle of your budget, how about Franco Serblin Accordos? They do pretty reasonable bass with SAM enabled, and would probably work nicely in a small-ish room. They don't occupy a huge amount of space either visually or physically, but they sound much bigger than they look. Incidentally, or not, they are also drop-dead gorgeous (to my eyes, ymmv).
