I agree with the concept of hifi sounding better at night - I've definitely experienced it myself.
I'd be interested in trying a mains cleaner like a balanced supply or filtered supply to see what effect, if any, is the power supply.
I can also imagine there are a few other key factors at play. Later generally equals quieter environmental background noise, which means we listen at lower volumes which are still enjoyable levels at night. Lower levels probably mean less room effects. Late night is also a time when the body /brain relaxes more.
