To summarise, you might have trouble using long link cables at higher sample rates (e.g. 3m link was found not to work reliably above 96 kHz). One work-around I suggested might be to use an active S/P-DIF to AES3 converter, although that's another box and more expense, of course (and I don't know whether anyone tried it).
