Devialet Phantom 108db 'pop' problem
#1
Hi,

108db and gold is the same thing I might mix some up

I'm kinda a new at forums and English is not my strongest language so excuse my grammar errors. I am an owner of 3 Devialet phantoms, 2 108db in a stereo config and a single 103db.
The golds are variants from 2021 which I bought one from January 2021 (old variant) and the other one I bought in July 2021 (matte black). The 103db is from January 2018. I also used to borrow a matte version 108 db from a friend which has the same problem (bought around the same month).
Now the problem,
When playing bass-heavy tracks that have a lot of 5-20hz bass, the speaker will have a sudden "pop" noise. It sounds like a lightbulb popping and sometimes happens when the deep bass part happens. The pop comes from the 2 woofers and it requires a restart after it happens. After restarting, The speaker will play just fine like nothing ever happened. This Problem occurs at around 60-70% volume and only occurs sometimes.

Some songs that will trigger this problem:

Bass I love you (the really deep 2 notes)
Steely Dan Two Against Nature Album (the kickdrum has plenty of sub 20hz spikes)
Hans Zimmer 2049 Album (Literally scared to play this one since it has way too much deep bass which gets the golds moving already at 45% volume)
Junior B Yello (A sudden wave of like 15hz signal at some parts of the song)

Movies:
John Wick 2 (Gunshots, Fist Fights they have sudden peaks which crazy signal below 20hz)
The Suicide Squads 2021 (The whole movie has really crazy peaks below 20hz and managed to get my Devialet to 'pop' at the first fight scene so I watched the movie with night mode Sad)
Justice League Snyder cut

I just want to note that this problem happens with 3 of the 108db phantoms I have tested and not the 103 variant. I have reached out to customer service but they told me to switch my phantoms since both my 108db's have hardware issues.
Another thing to note, from what I can remember, this problem only occurs when the phantoms are not 'warmed up' yet, I don't know if this is a coincidence but it could be the problem. Although something that costs $3200 each should not have this problem Smile.

My personal thought on this:

I think the reason why they 'pop' is because a limiter is preventing the woofers from having over-excursion and stops it before doing so. The phantoms have a limiter that lowers low frequencies the higher volume you go but this all depends on what songs you play. Albums with little to no information 30hz below can go to 65% no problem, but albums like Hans Zimmer 2049 (track 2049) can only go to 45% before the Golds start cutting sub 20hz bass BUT the problem is that it is not giving the speaker a high pass filter, instead, it is like a real-time volume robot that controls the volume of the sub 20hz but it reacts slowly sometimes and the limiter which in this case is the one that causes the 'pop' sound.

I am not a speaker technician and I certainly do not work in Devialet but what I know is that Devialet needs to add a high pass filter on the Golds to stop it from doing sub 20hz stuff since on some tracks it's just adding harmonic distortion.

I don't know if I said this but this problem could only be me so I am just posting this just to make sure if its only me or not

Does anyone have the same problem as me?
