Fitting optical cable to Phantoms and Tree Stand

Any tips on how to fit the optical cable please? I have never bothered to try because of the lack of space between the Phantom and the mains cable.
I want to try optical now though if anyone has a way to do this without a lot of swearing or dropping the Phantom!
