Small update for those that are interested...
I recently acquired a sonicTransporter (sT). Since I was also considering moving from HDD to SSD, I decided to spec the model with a 1TB SSD.
The sT means that I can make full use of the Totaldac's Roon Ready mode, see image below:
The sT is a very low powered headless computer (8W) that runs RoonServer among other things and is basically always on, much like my QNAP NAS.
I started off by copying over my .5TB music collection (roughly 600+ albums) over to the sT. All I had to do then at the Totaldac end was start the service via http://cubox.local:8080/ and then open the Roon app on my iPad. By the time I opened the app everything was organised by Roon, an utterly painless experience and definitely the most straightforward I have ever experienced!
The sT is currently running with its "dirty" power supply and it is connected directly into my Draytek router via a Totaldac ethernet cable that I had spare.
I have connected a spare USB port of the sT to an Olympus Minimus Entreq ground box using an Apollo USB ground cable. See image below:
So how does it all work. Well in a nutshell: brilliantly! I simply love the Roon app, on both my iPad and iPhone 6 Plus. Actually I probably use my iPhone more often to select and play tracks. Coming from MPD and iPeng this is a major improvement. For one I can edit metadata in the Roon app itself, no need to use other programs on my Mac. I am just starting to get my head around all the possibilities of Roon, to be honest a lot of it is probably lost on me but I will get there
From a sound quality point of view as some of you know I have recently been experimenting with AIR 3 beta and have been very impressed. Roon on my totaldac now definitely sounds better.
I have recently ordered a linear power supply - nothing fancy just a basic one from MCRU - which should arrive in a few days. I'm also waiting for a new Entreq cable: an Apollo RJ45 ground cable which I will use to connect my Draytek to the Olympus Minimus.
So probably enough to keep me busy for a few weeks
