Not a silly question.
The Synology NAS is connected by ethernet to a wireless router. The control point (Audiostation app on iPad) talks to the NAS via this wireless network.
It works perfectly: no drop-outs, no gremlins. The only drawback is that the Audiostation app is rather clunky and has very limited functionality, say compared to the Sonos app or to the JRiver app that I'm using now.
