If your thinking is correct, I have concerns with Devialet's market strategy.  I have no doubt as to the intelligence, fantastic design and sheer musicality of these products but if they intend to further raise their price point to imply a greater level of exclusivity they are simply wrong.  Dealerships in Canada are dropping the line, its idiosyncracies too tough for the average stick up their bum audiophile. ;-) and not  easily understandable nor available to the design motivated arts crowd (think B&O) when quality of music may not be such a priority...

As I said, I think it is too expensive and the cost of building these boards must be below 1,000 US$, but that may be Devialet's problem. Their amp technology is not only revolutionary in terms of level of sound quality achieved, it is even 10 times more impressive in terms of cost/performance.

The perceived value others generate with kgs of components, Devialet can only induce with high end feel, meaning luxury, which is mostly about the casing. Which poses a significant problem for upgrades... where we think in terms of components costs while they think in terms of best sound quality ever produced by a man made device, whatever its price.

Well, one shouldn't forget we don't only pay for the H/W and the casing, but also for the high cost of R&D. Devialet can look at it as if current customers helped them funding the R&D cost of the new H/W and give them the upgrade at a cost near the material cost. or have them pay a second time the full price, like a new customer...
