My only experience of upgrading Hifi components was with LINN. At different points in time I upgraded my Klimax DS and Klimax Solo amplifiers, and on both occasions these were fitted with completely new boards.
The cost worked out at around 25-30% of the RRP of each unit. So for the Klimax DS which had cost me around £12k the upgrade was something like £3.5k. The Solos were £4.5k for the pair (RRP of £8k each).
In the case of the Klimax DS what was quite clever was that as part of the upgrade LINN would repackage your old electronics in a new box - they called this the Klimax Renew. So for £3.5k not only did you effectively get a brand new Klimax DS but you got a second unit which you could sell to almost completely finance the cost of the upgrade! Which of course I did...
