Speaker wise I'm tempted to explore omnidirectional speakers. They could solve a lot of the room challenges but I don't know how soundstage works out in omnidirectional world.
I have no experience with omni directional speakers but I can only imagine they would add more reflections to the mix. Try before you buy would be the way to go.
