A bit cobbled together, no? What is that, 2 unnecessary D/A conversions? Hopefully just interim until an AV Dialog comes out. A box with 1/2 HDMI In (±whatever) -> DSP -> however many Optical Outs shouldn't be too difficult: the Meridian HD621 has been out for several years.
Or, alternatively, how many would be satisfied with even a 3-channel Expert Pro? It wouldn't seem to be a less tidy setup than the same number of Phantoms with multiple external processors, and not much more than the premium they're charging. Actually now that I think about it, a properly developed D1000 could make for a very attractive 7-channel solution.
