Crossover: IIR or FIR?
#1
Are the high pass / low pass filters available via the Configurator menu IIR or FIR filters?

The SHARC DSP chips should be FIR-capable, but I haven't been able to find any information on the type of filter used.

I think FIR, someone asked previously, but I cannot find the post right now, and I'm not 100% sure I remember correctly.

Yes, I searched for it before posting but couldn't find anything...

The post was about crossing over to subs I think, and was taking about phase shifts, not using IIR or FIR terms. Hopefully someone else can remember. I think someone had measured, not relied on asking support.

It is Bessel crossover. You can read more from here..

Are you sure that's what is also used for high-pass?

Bessel is more commonly used for low-pass.

Also, Bessel can be implemented using IIR or FIR (see: https://www.arc.id.au/FilterDesign.html) so it doesn't really answer the question.

Given that the filter has Bessel characteristics, I'm curious as to why you'd want to know (or care) whether it's implemented by FIR or IIR?

Partly just curiosity as to how their DSP is implemented. A lot of the implementation of the software inside is undisclosed.

Also to know how it compares to what I can do externally via other options, such as Roon's PEQ and convolution engine, or via MiniDSP.

Could you please ask from Devialet and inform also us what do they answer.

Here is their response:

"According to our engineers, the filters are optimized IIR filters for a low phase shift.

I hope this answers your questions, let us know if you have additional questions."
