How to reduce hiss with phono at high volumes?
#2
Hi

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately you are not the first to complain about the hiss from the Devialet MC phono input. There has been quite a lot of posts about this subject here.

I looked up your cartridge and it has quite a low output, 0.2mV, so the gain of the MC stage needs to be quite high.

As you have already discovered the high gain wIll give rise to some hiss from the phono stage in the Devialet.

My recommendation would be to find a suitable step up transformer for the Windfield and set up the phono stage in the Devialet to a moving magnet setting.

I am using a Koetsu Black Goldline MC which has a comparatively high output compared to the Windfield at 0.6mV, I get some hiss when using the Koetsu directly on an MC setting on the Devialet 440, but it’s not really that obtrusive.

However I have found that the best result is to use a step up transformer into the MM setting on the phono stage, no hiss and the sound is much better.

You have two other options of course. You could use a high quality moving coil head amplifier in place of a step up transformer. Or you could also use a separate MC phono preamp into a line input on the Devialet. However neither of those solutions will be as low noise as a step up transformer.
