new to devialet and could do with learning the basics

There's probably several possible reasons why you're not getting the sound you heard when you trialled a 220 but probably the most likely is that the dealer had SAM active for the speakers and the factory configuration ("out of the box") does not have SAM active.

Go to the online configurator and choose "access the configurator". That will walk you through the basic choices of input choices. When you get to the screen which gives you the choice of downloading the configuration or going to the advanced configurator then choose "go to the advanced configurator". All of your previously made choices will still be active. All you want to do here is to load a SAM profile for your speakers. Once you do that, then download the configuration file, copy it to the SD card, load the card into your 220 and sit back and play some music.

You may want to experiment with the level of SAM which controls how much bass extension you will get. You can set it anywhere between 0 and 100. !00 is maximum extension. 0 is not off. At o the phase correction that SAM applies in the bass is still active and will provide some extension but no further bass extension is added. You have to experiment to find the best level because room size and speaker and listening position placement will affect what you hear. If you don't like SAM and want to turn it off, then you can do so in the tone control menus via your remote but SAM will become active every time you restart the amp. The only way to really turn SAM off so that you don't have to bother turning it off every time you start the amp is to make a new configuration file without SAM.

That's the most basic approach to creating a configuration file. You can adjust the settings in the Advanced Configurator and there is some help/advice displayed for many of the settings as you access them. You can ask questions about different settings here as well.
