One other thought: you could perhaps ask for a copy of the configuration file from the unit you trialled, then simply copy that to your SD card.  That would be a quick way to confirm whether the differences you're hearing are in fact due to differences in the configuration.

Thanks for both responses.  I see the usual bass / treble adjustments using the remote control and have played around with them to try to get close to the trial unit - no success. The config copy is a good suggestion - I'll try that one.
