ROON
on the "Roon Ready network players", i see Totaldac and Auralic among many others listed on their site.

Gentlemen on our (Devialet) forum who are using these streamer/Audio-processor, did you try running Roon paired/(as Roon Server/headless) onto these devices ? And how is the experience?

Jnan, anything with an asterisk is still undergoing certification. So only Auralic (aries) is RoonReady certified out of those two.

Sorry for further asking questions, I m reading lot of topics on Roon forum (way too many of them and getting crazy switching from topic to topic).

Does this mean Roon is installed on Auralic Aries? Auralic Aries now becomes headless computer (sort off, but a good signal handling capabilities etc)?.
Whats RoonSpeakers? Is this something for these special devices listed under Roon Ready partners?

Don't be sorry for asking, its all fairly new so lots of (quickly changing) information as you say.

The Roon Website (not forum) gives a clear overview here: https://roonlabs.com/howroonworks.html

Right now, you essentially have a core, control and output.

Right now, the core runs on a computer (mac or win). you have to have one core.
the control can be the core computer if you like, and/or any other laptops, computers, iPad, android tablet.
the output is either the core machine, or another RoonReady device.

The RoonReady device is only a network 'endpoint' and does not remove the need for the core - the Aries is just getting its data from Roon core, and sending it on via any of its outputs. So the only bit of Roon installed on the Aries is their RAAT protocol, and whatever code supports that.

RoonSpeakers is now called RoonBridge. It hasn't been released yet. Should be in v1.2. It is essentially RoonReady, but not on a certified device - you will be able to install in on a Mac/Windows or linux machine, and possibly things like the Raspberry Pi, making your own network endpoint. It will also mean you can connect DACs to your remote devices as well as the core. It is the software that gives you 'outputs'

If you ask again in two weeks or so, things will probably be simpler as 1.2 solidifies and simplifies a lot of whats out there now - in brief, core will still be the central brain but will run on win/osx/linux, remotes are the same, but importantly the output (RoonBridge) will be able to be installed on many devices too. Multi-room should be a lot simpler too. Let's see how close I got when it comes out!

Interesting. Thanks, getting educated now.

Yes I have Roon (Full) installed on my "MacBook-Air" and > USB to Devialet. This worked for me during trial version. (Thanks to Gary)

Roon Remote will be installed on my yet to receive ipad mini 4, will be delivered today evening, (anytime now). Once I download or install Roon Remote onto ipad, after that the app figures automatically Roon on MacBook-Air ? Assuming MacBook-Air is already ON, streaming to Devialet etc.

I'm not sure about you guys, I just don't like to pay at recommended retail price. Just being honest who doesn't like a discount?  Big Grin

On a serious note, I am not into computer audio yet. Paying $500 for something that could potentially be a white elephant is just not rational. The one week trial is just too short for me. Annual subscription just don't cut it for me. However if I can get some sort of discount I don't mind giving support to the Roon guys, especially after being made aware that someone got it for $200.

With my intention to have a dedicated front end server in the form of an Aurender or Melco, I won't have the core and therefore I probably do not need the Roon.

The Roon trial period is 2 weeks, not one. And IMO, Roon is way past the risk of being a white elephant.

The discount that I recall was a one-time thing (Black Friday last year? ) where the amount of discount was a function of how many licenses you bought.   The biggest discount I recall was 50% off and that was for buying 5 licenses, far less for just a single license.   I don't recall it ever selling for $200 but perhaps that was well before I started following Roon.

Who knows - maybe they would support a "group buy" for members of this forum if someone wanted to organize it and could get enough to join in.

I got $399. Which I think is good price and to respect the Architects who work their ____ off, to make things work well. It's the innovation we should respect - My Thought process. No right wrong here.
