Bertie’s Box
#1
And it is a box: 4m x 4m, roughly speaking. Took me about a year to find four 2nd hand Rels! Absolutely ignored John Hunter’s advice to stack ‘em high and connect them with ‘Blue’ cables. Got them floored on wall facing listening position and left flank. Yes, I’m well aware that this is an unacceptable placement but, until I get the funds to move house and hire a subwoofer tuning guru, it stays as it is.
BTW, everything I buy has a visual element to consider; the concrete Sopras were bought because they matched the Lunar grey Cambridge Edge NQ/W pairing I had at the time. They turned out to be lovely, but always felt they’d like a bit more poke, so I bought some… French poke, with my Devialet 220. This became the 440 shortly after (this was, I felt, the best upgrade I’ve made so far).
I had a Rel T9x and decided to jump into the sub-bass ecosystem, which now finds me with the four S812s I have now. I tuned them as best I could and have to say I’m very inspired by the music (and movies) coming from the system as it is. I genuinely have withdrawal symptoms when away from home. It’s been a catalogue of happy accidents to get me where I am today, and my next will be to replace the Sopras with gloss black B&W 802 D3s (cause they’re cheaper than D4s) or black Focal Diablo standmounters to match the gloss black subs. The upgrade after that may well be a Gryphon 300 or 333.
My cable journey’s borne of an inability to hear any difference: I’ve had the speaker wire since 2002 and seems okay, so I’ll keep that in situ. One pair of subs (which I’m running as the left bass) is connected with a 15m run of hi-level Speakon from eBay (£45) and joined to the second sub with a £25 Van Damme Speakon to Speakon. My Devialets came with Audioquest mains, so I use them, but I bought a pair of Chinese mains for my subs and, as soon as they arrived, immediately sent off for another pair. Much as I’m unable to hear any difference, these cables are really solid; have substantial connectors and weigh about 2kgs apiece. They’re just far and away the best £25 ‘things’ I own and made me very happy when I plumbed them in.
I’m no audiophile, cause I’m unable to differentiate between the small stuff, so, I guess I just get immense pleasure from collecting audio equipment and arranging it in my modest space.
