MELCO

What type of grounding boxes do you use?

I have an Entreq Silver Tellus and a Silver Minimus. I find it doesn't make any real difference when the Melco is connected to a grounding box but have it connected anyway as I have a spare cable.

Small update - I asked on the Minimserver forum and the Simon the developer of Minimserver says that the slight gap in gapless playback over USB with the Melco is something that will be fixed by Melco soon.

There's an extremely glowing, or in the editor's words 'gushing', review of the Melco N1Z in this month's HiFi+. It gets their strongest recommendation with the only downside being that gapless playback is not currently supported. The article doesn't appear to be on the web so can't share a link. It makes reference to try not think of it as a computer audio device. It states it's not a PC but unfortunately doesn't expand on that........Supposed to have stunning sound as Guillaume has already attested too!

One of the things I like about the Melcos is the fact they're like an 'appliance' that you plug in and it just works, and works well. Rather than concentrate on billions of features they've concentrated on the core functionality and ensure that it works well and is all logical to operate. I think they've done a very good job and it's refreshing compared to the rather hit and miss functionality of most hi-fi components these days.

Has anyone compared the Melcos to the Antipodes from Australia? Another very highly regarded server.

Recently I found out that the above displayed part of the specs did NOT mean Melco uses some form of opto isolation (galvanically isolating the ethernet inputs by converting the input signal into light). Instead it means that they 'lead' the light from ethernet status/activity LED's (which are not inside the ethernet connector but on the PCB surrounding it) through a plastic "pipe" to the back of the device.

For their "complete electrical isolation" they still use 'conventional' pulse transformers.

IMO it's specs are bordering on deceiving...perhaps crossing the border but I'm not sure I'm not a lawyer. Undecided

Yes, the description of the NICs is a little confusing and I have to admit I initially thought they might be opto-isolated.
