New firmware 8.1.3

8.1.3 is too hot, with the result that I've had to use tone controls for the first time to dial down the treble.  SAM is also unusable on my Akurates - weird, very boomy, hollow sounding bass - so I've switched it off.

I could contact Devialet and ask them to investigate, but I'm with you, Confused.  I couldn't be bothered getting another firmware version which will inevitably be superseded within a few weeks. Getting equally fed up with all this palaver.  Rant over.

ATB, Ken

I guess I could understand where some systems could result in the 8.1.3 beta FW (and by extension 8.1.3 official release) sounding too bright.  That is definitely not where my system is/was sitting sonically.

Did you try the 8.1.3 beta?

Guillaume

Guillaume, no, I didn't. i don't have it. I will PM you about it.

I found the difference between 8.1.3 (normal release) and 7.1.3 bigger than I expected in terms not so much of quality but of sound signature. And again, on dark or subdued speakers, 8.1.3 (normal) may be better for some listeners. But 7.1.3 "clicked" with my Gallos.

Someone said it better before: 8.x.x is excellent, high-end hifi. 7.1.3 sounds more like the real thing. Much less impressive, yes. But real. Were I a reviewer, I would have written a substantially different comment in both cases. (Both positive: reviewers never post a negative review!)

If the beta 8.1.3 is able to keep the naturalness of 7.1.3, then it'll be difficult to improve upon!

The boominess is centered around 100 hz. The response centred around 40hz is pretty flat.

Kerry

That's interesting.  To be honest I'm looking for trends, however, my issues were at the very very lowest frequencies, at about 100 Hz SAM is doing next to nothing.  I'm starting to think that SAM 2 issues are speaker specific, if there are trends they are quite well hidden.

I am hearing the slight boominess in the acoustic/electric bass, so there are frequencies between 40-100 hz in this instrument. Definite SAM territory, and easy to correct with a slight dial back.

Οbserving the files of both versions 8.1.3 beta and 8.1.3 i find that is exactly the files are the same. How can the sound quality change? Is there something that skips my attention??

the files are not the same. The ihm_800.hex file of the beta is about 1200 bytes smaller. Only the names are the same.

I know next to nothing about this sorta thing but thought this might be worth checking out as a key to understanding the hex dilemma. If worthless please pardon the attempt.
