With the release of Roon 1.2 & RoonBridge and the myriad of comments here, I did what I said I was never going to do again... gave AIR another chance. I setup a separate, stripped down Win 10 PC and installed RoonBridge and AIR on it. That was 6 days ago and damned if it didn't work right off. But as we all know, getting AIR working is not that hard, keeping it working is the challenge.
So yesterday - 5 days in - and it was still working! No stuttering, no white noise. Even with hi-res (no, had not yet braved DSD). So I started thinking that AIR's big problem was simply dealing with a heavily multitasked PC. The stripped-down PC was clearly allowing AIR to work as it should. Sounded pretty awesome as well.
Too good to be true? Late last night, after playing hi-res content for hours... I was just kinda dozing off and... wait for it... you know it's coming... has AIR ever failed us?... of course it has! white noise! AIR is nothing if not predictable. The good news - that's by far the longest I've ever successfully kept AIR running. But that's like saying I've got a great car - it runs for 5 days straight - until the wheels fall off.
So once again I'll state - I will never try using AIR again. Ever. Well, until the new release is out and blows us all away. Hey, it could happen. Maybe it'll work for 10 days straight. 100% improvement!
