in my case my vinyl collection is 'old' so there is quite a lot of AAA there (to use a modern day acronym) Many albums are available in digital, but I did not buy too many of those. Of the few I bought there are some with bad transfer to digital so I'd like to be able to play the vinyl. I do not subscribe to Tidal (or Qobuz) so I do not have access to the large libraries of digital transfers. And most of that is only redbook anyway.

I get it. That's a solid reason to buy one of these so clearly there is a market. The alternative for you would be digitising all your albums via the Devialet USB port. That's a big job though.

I have a few vinyl 'rips' that I did a couple of years ago. These sound very good indeed. Let us say I rip 150 albums. It would take some time to do it even if I use an excellent program like Vinyl Studio (https://www.alpinesoft.co.uk/). Then I upgrade my vinyl rig. New player, arm and cartridge. The new kit sounds much better than the old so I should re-rip the 150 albums...
Better to play and stream vinyl live.. Big Grin

Given that there are many other phono stages out there that digitise the signal it seems awfully expensive

There are many phono/AD combinations in the market that can digitise the signal, but these can not put a live stream to Roon. Roon does not have an input for a USB or SPDIF signal. The only way at the moment is to connect to an internet radio instance to receive a stream. The Trans Vinyl unit can act as a radio station.
JRiver has a device for this kind of input, but that requires the server to be close to the source. Rumour has it that this is somewhat unstable...
I am a Roon user so I do not want to go back to JRiver. Take a look at this thread at the Roon forum: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/can-a-l...roon/42373

You can buy a bit of software for $100 that can convert a USB input into a radio stream for Roon. In fact I think there’s some freeware that’ll do it too.

That is what the Roon link primarily talks about, but it is very DIY. Many prefer non-DYI. Please provide links and maybe a howto for what you suggest. Its very interesting.

I may be missing something but the only reason I can see for streaming vinyl live is that you're unable to connect your vinyl rig directly to your Devialet's analog input. Is the vinyl rig in another room? I would think that a direct connection to the Devialet's analog inputs would be better than using another phono stage to do the analog to digital conversion and then to stream that to your Devialet over wifi unless you either can't make the direct connection from turntable to Devialet or the phono stage and analog to digital conversion in this device are noticeably superior to what the Devialet can do.

Man you seem to have thought this one through. You even convinced me to buy one and I don't even own vinyl anymore. Tongue

If Devialet had enabled room correction in the DSP that would of course be the preferred method. As it is now I'm using convolution in Roon for RC and depend on sending all streams through Roon.

I asked Rouge Amoeba directly about presenting a 'radio station' inteface from a USB input. The answer was:

"No, Airfoil does not create Internet Radio stations. As of Airfoil version 5.5, Airfoil currently supports three different audio technologies:

* AirPlay devices on your local network
* Bluetooth devices paired to your computer
* Chromecast devices on your local network

You can use one type of device, all three, or any combination that suits your setup"

The Pi (or Linux) solution described by qdtjni on the Roon forum is presently the only low price way to do it. The Trans Vinyl unit may work as the only turnkey solution, but we still do not know if it is compatible with Roon.
