To DPM or not? That is the question.

Could it be that with DPM on, the bass is a bit less tight and therefore sounds a bit 'rounder'?

With DPM (ON) the Devialet sounds just right. Instruments sound right, there is a delicacy to them. The decay of piano notes is longer. I compared it to my class A/B power-pre setup and it is a close match. My speakers are Sonus Faber Olympica I so can't really expect much bass from a two-way design. I find the with DPM(OFF) I have the tendency to multitask more and when (ON) the sound is more relaxing.

Just saw this thread.
To me, on my 120 DPM absolutely must be off.

I had my 120 up for sale after one day because it sounded so awful. Then someone suggested turning DPM off and a year later I’m still loving it.

I don’t know the sound levels since I feed my 220 set at 0db with the Hugo 2 at dark blue levels. The clarity is much better with DPM OFF listening to « Sway » Diana Krall FLAC 192/48. With DPM ON, it’s like going back to a Mojo.  For me in this game of diminishing returns « huge » is the difference between a Mojo vs a Hugo 2. The  dynamics are most obvious playing « Billy Jean » DSD 2.8. I’ve listened to a demo HD recording called « dsr005-01-2496.wav » found on the internet. The uprise in the beginning of each note appears faster more rhythmic with DPM OFF.

I had been listening a lot on my HD 800 directly plugged into my Hugo 2 (which I prefer to using my Bryston BHA-1 for clarity) because my kids are studying. Going back to my speakers and 220 was a bigger drop in resolution than I had remembered. Turning DPM OFF brought back that initial enjoyment I had when I first put this system together.

I’d be interested to know what level you’re listening at, and what sort of music, to hear such a “huge improvement”?

I’ve experimented with DPM on and off at levels from between -30 dB to -15dB and I can hear no difference.

I'm with you. I don't use SAM and my listening levels mostly range from -25 dB to -15 dB, very occasionally to -10 dB or so. I don't hear a difference.

What other tweeks in the configuration did you do?

Sorry for the dumb question, but what is DPM?

Dynamic Power Management. With it engaged, the units run a bit cooler. Some hear a difference and others don’t. I’m in the second camp, but leave it turned off.

Hello,

I admit that I do not hear any difference with or without DPM. Sometimes, I feel like I do not have a good ear ... or a bad acoustic in my room (probably ;-))

Good evening,
Finally, I tested without DPM, without SAM and the sound made me more ... natural.
I will still continue in this direction to test for longer.
What do you think?

I have been following this Thread and for the 1st time since owning Devialet Expert amps tried with DPM = OFF.

WOW !!!  It makes a Big difference with my B&W 802-D3 that are bi-amped using 4 x 440-Pro and I kinda kept hearing my fav tracks & wondered 'why the heck didn't I turn this thing OFF all this while ? '

I guess I'm going to keep it OFF but I do have to agree with other posters here that set to ON, it is a "bit rounder, more polite" presentation ...

My listening levels vary from approx. -25dB to -12dB generally, sometimes does go to -9dB or even at times to -3dB so I'll have to monitor unit temperatures closely (only when the Remote hopefully ships back from Devialet France).
