Lightning app is quite nice. it has semi-integrated with tidal - the music library on NAS is separated from Tidal and other music services. However, if you would like to search, it searches on both your music library and tidal. hope this is helpful.

(01-Jan-2016, 06:06)warpeon Wrote: [ -> ]It is quite simple. I got fed up with AIR problems with my computer. I picked Aries mini because of it relative cheap price but the Lightning app looks good. I figured the streamer itself is only a small part of the investment to get good usb implementation-jitterbug, decent cable, Regen, LPSUs, AC & DC power cables.

Sound quality-wise, all these investments are only similar to AIR (I haven't invested in the LPSUs yet, but done all of the mentioned). That is both encouraging and disappointing. Encouraging in the sense that AIR sounds good but free. Disappointing in the sense that is is not updated and partly broken.

My 2 cents. Hope this helps.

Hello, I'm also fed up with the AIR and I was also interested in the Aries. Currently I'm using Roon and I was wondering about the Lightning app. How good is it? How well does it mix NAS content with Tidal?

If you use Android tablet Auralic is not a good choice, Lightning App is not a finished product on Android. I use Bubble UPnP app instead and that functions better than Lightning but is similar to Lightning that it does not mix NAS and Tidal together, today I think only ROON has that feature.
I tried ROON on my computer and that is the best app today without a question I think, but problems with AIR and Win 10 rebooting it self I got feed up with it so now I am waiting for CES in Las Vegas to see if someone like Melco for example will implement ROON in their hardware as the Melco N1A seems to be a killer combo with Devialet.

Auralic are apparently showing 'RoonReady' devices at CES for their non-mini versions next week, so shouldn't be too long before you can use Roon native into the mini. So you'll have a choice of Roon or Lightning.

+ Deeper/rounder bass, better separation among frequencies, nicer highs. Maybe I am wrong but I sense more control/power as well.
- Soundstage has gone back 10-15m and is slightly narrower, at times SQ edges more towards power/detail vs elegance.

In my system (Aries+250+Lawrence Audio Double Bass) it's very enjoyable, however I wonder if Devialet could one day offer an easy switch among the most popular setups (7.1, 9, ...)

Given the changes I am wondering if I need to try different speaker / listening positions & toe-in to optimize the sound. Thoughts welcome!

In my system this is the closest sound to the 7.1.1 version (which is the one I´ve been using since the launch of the 8.0. series); all the previous versions, including the famed 7.1.3, are too harsh and digital, impossible to sustain during prolonged listening sessions...
In the 9.0.1 the mids are little more analog, easier on the ears, and although there is a noticeable preeminence in the bass, i manage to reduce it by -3 db, using the tone control...
I also agree that the soundstage is only slightly narrower and i get a sense of more control overall.
Not sure what I think about 9.0.1

It seems pretty much like 8.0.3 but perhaps even more bassy if that's possible - not really in a good way - almost too much deep bass and sounding very slightly boxy and distorted on the Facts, rather than a weighty/punchy bass. Seems just as 'in your face' as 8.1.3, which is to say too far that way to my taste compared to 7.1.1.

To be honest I'd just stick with 7.1.1 if it weren't for the fact that I'd like to be able to stay current just for ease/simplicity with configurator as well as keeping up to date with new features.

My main reason for trying was experimenting with DSD and HQPlayer just to see if I could hear an Sq improvement. To my ears I couldn't. Reading their white paper, DSD just gets converted straight back to Devialets native PCM anyway (40/384) so maybe that's the reason. Or my system/ears.

Will try one last experiment this week using a Pi as NAA just to say I've done it. Then probably move on.
Just killing time until I can get Dirac back up and running. I'm sort of thinking I might try with 9.0.1 this time just because it's already installed - assuming it lasts that long.

I think it's safe to say I'm not going to like any firmware after 7.1.1 as they seem to be sticking with a 'livelier' more forward sound, so it's decision time as to permanently reverting to 7.1.1 and losing out on any new features, or new speakers/new approach maybe. If I'd never heard the 6.x or 7.x series I wouldn't have known better but I think PMC and 8+ firmware is just too harsh in its raw format in my lounge.

JMRC -which bass frequency are you reducing by -3db exactly?

I`m just using the middle button of my Devialet control as the tone control, and thus reducing the overall bass output on the amplifier (to my knowledge I can´t use the control as a equalizer)... By the way, I too get the feeling of "on your face" presentation with the 9.0.1 firmware, which is not good...
In my chain with B&W 800 Diamond and SAM 100%, 9.0.1 is sounding somewhat thinner than 8.1.3 and especially in the bass frequencies. Not so much change to soundstage to me although sound seems to be more direct.

Will compare a little bit more over next days but for the moment likely to stick with 8.1.3
I'm sort of curious enough to try and measure a simple sweep with firmware 7, 8, and 9 and see if there are any obvious differences. I can't imagine there wouldnt be.

But with return to work looming tomorrow, this probably won't become a reality.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the lightning app you have mentioned? (other also have mentioned it but I can't seem to find anything on it)
