Is the Devialet Expert now valueless?
#41
I started out with an Expert 200 and updated to the 220 Pro and then later added a 2nd 220 Pro (now 440 Pro). Each step was a quite noticeable improvement (my ears, my room, my system) but, of course, whether it was worth the cost is a choice for each to make. No regrets here. Not sure if it's even possible to still upgrade to a Pro, and I doubt I would do that now even if I could.

Today, if I owned an Expert (not Pro), I think I'd just hang on to it if I still enjoyed the sound. I'm sure it still has residual value, but may prove difficult to sell.

I'm still enjoying my 440 Pro and would never remotely consider the Astra because a) the way Devialet abandoned development of the Expert Pro series and b) the crazy Astra pricing. But hey, that's just me.

OK, so I'm a year behind on this thread. That said, I haven't been here much since I sold my 220 over a year ago. NB not because I was unhappy with it, but I changed the whole system to be much less expensive as we are travelling a lot, and doing house exchanges; having $25,000.00 in possibly fragile gear just didn't make sense. I miss the 220, just as I miss my Dali Epicon 2's and the Lawrence Audio Violin SE's before the Dalis.

All that said, and back on topic, I'm actually considering an Expert 120 again. I personally find the Devialet sound to be superb, and even if old the music that it made 10 years ago, when I discovered it, would still be there. So for me, the Expert line is not valueless. Old Naim equipment is much cheaper than it used to be, as is NAD and a bunch of other brands. I'd say that used Devialet gear is probably an excellent buy.

Greetings to all my old friends, and foes, that I've never actually met!

For its current price (with large discounts or used), Devialet Expert (Pro) is still a great value - with all its (minor) bugs and lack of support.

It has great sound, it's very practical, it has a lot of useful functionalities.

Is there something better in the market? Of course. But it costs (much) more.
