In my opinion, your options are as follow:
Audio quality wise, either put a bit of EQ (zero cost and best) to account for Fletcher/Munson curve of our ears or add a subwoofer as per Docvale suggestion (more costly but will more or less do an EQ).
Going the D440 route is the best route Audio quality wise for when you will get bigger speakers or if you feel limited at high volume (which apparently you don’t experience), typically if you are turning the volume above -6dB.
For the Airplay 2 question, I have solved it by adding an AirPort Express which is Airplay2 and have an optical connection.
