USB to Phantom/Dialog - operational?

I think I've asked this before but don't remember the answer. 

With the Phantom, can one simply connect a laptop USB output to the Phantom, or the Dialog (for stereo) so that all sounds form the laptop is put through the USB?  This would assume an internal USB capable DAC. 

Or does one have to go optical?
