Good write up, Nick.
I hear you on marketing - I'm normally quite cynical but somehow when it comes to audio I'll believe almost any thing they tell me!
I think the phantoms, like any system, respond to the room. Or vice versa. Anyway that bass is prodigious and I have found that some consideration to placement is needed - i.e. not right in the corners.
I have a fairly high end system - Geithain 930k speakers and a Lindemann DAC. The phantoms are close to this system in quality. However when I first installed the phantoms in another room I was happy but not blown away. Then I swapped the systems over between rooms. And I was blown away! Both systems sound much better in their new rooms.
So my suggestion is to experiment a little with placement. Maybe something will click or maybe not. Hifi is such an individual preference - that is part of the joy!
