Slow Ethernet Network with Duplex Mismatch and Autonegotiation:

Many unmanaged switches do not offer duplex settings and always use autonegotiation. At these switches, the terminals are thus forced to set to autonegotiation. Some NIC manufacturers also refer to autonegotiation as autosensing, autodetection or mediasensing. Clients connected to a hub must always be set to half-duplex.

It has unfortunately been shown that the combination Autonegotiaton / Autonegotiaton does not always work reliably. Therefore, it is best to set both partners firmly to the same standards.

It therefore always applies: For full utilization of the bandwidth, both link partners (Switch, PC) must be configured to the same duplex settings. Either both fixed on full duplex or both on autonegotiation. If half duplex is plugged together with full duplex, then there is apparently a data transmission, but with an extreme number of collisions, which can lead over time to a complete standstill of the entire network. Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-T, 1000Base-SX, 1000Base-LX) is always transmitted only full duplex. Full duplex is only available with switches.

For the network user, a duplex mismatch is manifested by extremely poor network performance. An increase in performance of up to 200% by simply adjusting the settings is actually possible. The degradation in performance due to a duplex mismatch is directional. The performance of the half-duplex port is particularly strong during transmission.
