could be, but be ware that cyclic redundancy check (CRC) might be different

Yes, of course - sorry if I was woolly; I meant a proper line-by-line diff, not just a file comparison. Will report the results asap. Cheers!

Quick update: apart from the timestamp (and hence CRC), diff showed no changes in the master configuration depending on whether the master/slave link goes to the RCA or AES/EBU input on the slave.
Now for the fun part: listening with the RCA-XLR cable!

Thanks for the effort invested to check them line by line.
Now tell us if you hear any difference

Will work on a new configuration for my D400 and report back later
Quick question, if you don't mind: did you re-configure the master as well as the slave? (I guess it should only be necessary to change the slave configuration.) I'm hoping to have a play with this over the next few days since I now have an RCA-to-XLR adapter.
Which adapter for RCA to AES/EBU are you using?
D400; Stereolab Tombo Tron coaxial for master -> slave; Kubala-Sosna Elation interconnects, power, and speaker cables; Spendor D7 speakers; Bryston BDP-2 w. latest sound card & upgraded fuses; Bybee Stealth Power Purifier conditioner connected with IsoTek EVO3 Syncro SE to wall socket

I'm using the same Neutrik NA2MPMM adapter as amabrok mentioned earlier (see posts 182 and 186 of this thread).
Unfortunately I haven't had chance to listen to anything today as I'd hoped so can't say anything yet about sound quality changes or otherwise.

I used a Stereolab Tombo Tron coaxial for master -> slave, instead of the stock Crystal Cable Standard Diamond digital link cable,
and the performance improved.

I recall other members reporting on the relatively lower quality of the stock Crystal Cable. I guess your observation is consistent with earlier observations.
I'm just curious how would you describe the improvement.
Also keen to know if someone here tested an AES/EBU - RCA link vs a better quality RCA - RCA cable?

The improvement was as though the entire system disappeared, and I was at a live performance.
