Roon - the next step?
#71
@Pim trust me I would be no good as the guinea pig as I am not good at spotting sound differences unless they smack me in the face ;-)

Roon the last step:
After the hype about roon I wanted to test again whether roon might be suitable for me. Since I have stored about 4000 albums on the melco, and had recently cleaned all the file errors with SongKong (double albums, cover errors, etc.) I have to test a flawless basis. With a usb plate, with a copy (300 albums) of melco I start now. After a short time already the first disillusionment, metadata are wrong or partially present. For example, Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" no data of the musicians etc. but only info to the producers, sound engineers. Roon seems to use "All Music" (formerly AMG, Last FM), why not from a reliable source such as "Discogs".
Sometimes the credits are extensive and complete, sometimes disappointingly little or even false genres. So, of the 300 albums are about 20% for post-processing! Roon should first take care of reliable and complete metadata. What use all the beautiful filter, if Roon albums for lack of relevant metadata wrong, or not recorded !! If you think you buy Roon and everything is good, it's wrong. I made my personal decision, stay with TIDAL, Qobuz stream via USB or UPnP, and everything is fine. Roon, nothing for me! Sad
@Womaz, thanks for your detailed reports!

A big thank you to all who have contributed to this thread, it has been very helpful.
I have come to the conclusion that I will go for Lifetime Room membership in May when my 3 month trial finishes. I have had a couple of issues with Roon, but overall I love it and it seems like they are pretty customer focused, so I trust them to develop their software in the future too. So I think it is £500 or do we get a cheaper rate here in the UK as the exchange rate? No idea.
I am going to put on hold my purchase of additional equipment as I was just not totally convinced by any of the products and I need to find out more about them. Also my gut feeling is that there will be a lot more Roon server products come to the fore over say the next 6 months or so. I also have the temporary solution of my lap top at present. It is not ideal but it can act as a stop gap.
Tidal & Roon brilliant, Roon without Tidal for me would be pretty pointless and there are appears to be a few issues with Roon and Tidal recently and they appear to be increasing , I know I am only going off Forums but I have read a lot and I think sitting tight is my best option for now.
So I will go for Lifetime Roon membership, but not prepared to change my set up just yet.

Hey Womaz, buy this!

It’s a bit scabby to be honest, but might be a bargain. Something to try, and you could re-sell it if you wanted to without losing too much.

Plus a note to Pim, you should check out interest rates in the UK!
